Cat Breeds: American Shorthair
The American Shorthair, also known as “ASH”, is a breed domesticated from Europe and initially brought to America by early settlers. These cats were brought aboard ships to prevent mice and rat infestations in the cargo. Thus, they were called “mousers” because of their initial purpose. The American Shorthair eventually interbred and developed characteristics unique to their breed and this would help them cope to a new life in a new land. They are the 8th most popular breed in the U.S.
Personality
The American Shorthair cat is a very affectionate and friendly breed. They are also playful and gentle, and make wonderful pets for families with children. They are quiet and do not demand for your attention. However, they are still social creatures and do not like to be alone. They sometimes can even watch over children and act as their best friend. They are also highly intelligent creatures.
The American Shorthair cats will do wonderfully well in an apartment or a condominium. They do not mind traveling and they are low-maintenance.
Characteristics
These cats are athletic, lean, powerful, and are known as working cats. They were originally called “Domestic Shorthair”. Today, American Shorthairs are pedigreed cats while the Domestic Shorthair is not pedigreed. Males are larger than females and weigh 11-15 pounds, while females weigh approximately 8-12 pounds.
The lifespan of the American Shorthair is 15-20 years with the proper maintenance. They have long tails and muscular bodies, with thick hair bristles. They usually have full cheeks with round eyes, and big heads. They have over 80 color types and patterns, including shaded silvers, smokes, cameos, calico, and blue-eyed white.
Obesity Issues
The main health illness for the American Shorthair is obesity, and this is only if they are overfed and are not given the proper diet. It is therefore important that you do not give in to their cuteness and feed them too much.
Housebreaking and Grooming
This breed can easily be litter box-trained by the time they are 8 weeks old. They shed like any other average cat, and you may need to brush them every other day.
Diet
American Shorthair cats thrive on a high protein diet, like most cats. Make sure that whether you give them canned food or cat kibble, they still get the adequate amount of protein. Some cats are picky eaters so you can try to give them a variety of cat food until they settle on a preference.
