Sphynx the Latest Pet Craze

These feline friends may remind you of the movie “Austin Powers”, but these bald Sphynx cats are fetching up to $3,000 apiece as the latest must-have pet.

The wrinkly felines are a rare breed which is perfect for asthma sufferers or those who are sick off cleaning fur from their furniture.

Pam Williams, secretary of the Sphynx Cat Association, said the animals are becoming increasingly popular as pets.

She added: ‘They’re a bit like Marmite - you either love them or hate them.
‘Since they have been officially recognized as a breed in 2005, they have become more and more popular.

‘They have a brilliant temperament and are almost more like a dog than a cat. They play fetch and are extremely loyal.

‘During summer, owners need to be very aware of the sun and ideally, use sunscreen to protect them as they burn very quickly.’

Sphynxes normally live between nine and 15 years and are known for snuggling up to other breeds and their owners to keep warm.

New owner Paul Reed, 40, said: ‘They might look a little strange but they have a great temperament, although I imagine they might need a hug in the winter.

‘Thankfully, it’s not been too hot yet, but I imagine they may need a liberal coating of sunscreen when the sun finally does come out.’
